USATF & AAU

There are two national organizations for youth track & field, USA Track & Field (USATF) and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Both organizations require an annual membership fee of around twenty dollars for an athlete to participate in their sanctioned meets. USATF has two-year age divisions, while AAU has single year divisions. Division entry is based upon year of birth, and limitation of the number of events that a child may enter in any given meet depends on which division he or she participates in. Both organizations offer athletes the opportunity to excel in national competitions, and both have a Junior Olympic program.
Track meets for both organizations are held from late April to early August, and are predominately located at tracks from Richmond to Virginia Beach. In 2009, we also attended several meets in the Washington DC area. Entry fees for the meet depends on the meet director. Some meets are $5 for four events, the most expensive is $8 per entered event. Although there is generally a meet somewhere every Saturday during the season, we typically take one or two weekends off a month.
